The Issue

Harford County, Maryland is a place rich in history and tradition. It is a community where the heritage of the past lives on through families who have cultivated the land for generations. Unfortunately, this cherished way of life faces a significant threat from unchecked industrial development, particularly the construction of data centers and other large infrastructure projects like solar farms.

One such proposed development site is the Mountain Branch Golf Course. If permitted, this site could forever alter the livelihoods and quality of life for countless residents. It is crucial that we reconsider these plans in light of the unwelcome changes they would bring to our community's landscape and everyday life. Additionally, our opposition doesn't stop at Mountain Branch. This is not a "Not In My Backyard!" type movement. We care for all the residents and communities in Harford County and believe there is no place for placing data centers anywhere that our residents' quality of life may even be fractionally impacted.

Industrial complexes, especially data centers, promise economic progress, but at what cost? These developments bring to the forefront critical issues related to land use, infrastructure strain, environmental impact, and overall quality of life. Instead of transforming residential areas into industrial zones, real conversations about sustainable development that balances economic growth with community well-being must be held.

Data centers are known to demand significant amounts of energy and water, often stressing local infrastructure and resources. They can lead to increased noise pollution, traffic congestion, and environmental degradation. Moreover, they alter the character of residential neighborhoods, replacing the peaceful ambiance with a constant industrial hum.

There needs to be a better approach to development in Harford County. One that respects and preserves our neighborhoods' character, protects our environment, and considers residents' needs by keeping industrial projects away from our homes and community spaces. We need to explore locations for these developments that do not intrude upon residential life or threaten our environment.

We call on local officials, planners, and developers to prioritize sustainable growth that does not come at the expense of our rich cultural heritage and the well-being of Harford County’s residents. It is vital that the voices of those who are deeply affected are heard and respected in these crucial discussions.

Join us in advocating for a future where economic progress and community preservation go hand in hand. Sign this petition to say no to data centers and industrial complexes in residential areas of Harford County, Maryland. Help us protect the soul and character of our beloved community.

The Decision Makers

Bob Cassilly
Harford County Executive
Responded
Over the past year, my administration has been following closely the national debate and serious concerns regarding data centers, and I want to be clear on my administration’s position on this important issue. Data centers are not currently permitted under the Harford County Code anywhere in the county. Although we have received proposals from outside entities to change the zoning code, I have significant concerns regarding the negative impact these facilities would have on our community. They would pose considerable burdens on energy and water resources and create significant noise, all to the detriment of residents. I do not support any legislation by the County Council to bring data centers into our county. We need a far better understanding of measures that must be taken to address the serious concerns data centers present to our community before we can properly consider any data center legislation. – Harford County Executive Bob Cassilly
