The Issue

Living in El Dorado, Kansas has always been a blessing to those of us who cherish the simple and peaceful life. Surrounded by the beauty of nature, we have the privilege of enjoying hunting, fishing, and water recreation, allowing us to connect with our surroundings and uphold our cherished traditions. Our community stands as a testament to small-town charm, where everyone knows their neighbors, and life moves at a more reassuring, slower pace. It is this peace and solitude that we call home.

However, the threat of large data centers being established in El Dorado is jeopardizing this way of life. These data centers, reliant on vast amounts of energy, often equate to environmental degradation, increased noise, mega water consumption and disruption to wildlife habitats. They do not align with our values or our vision for the future of El Dorado. We risk losing the very essence of what makes our community special, transforming it into a hub for battery storage and nuclear power.

Data centers bring with them increased energy and water consumption and environmental risks. According to studies, a typical data center consumes as much electricity as 50,000 homes combined, which could drastically impact our local ecosystem and contribute to pollution. Furthermore, our local resources, especially our water sources, could face depletion due to excessive cooling needs of such facilities.

The establishment of these centers goes against our desire to preserve our natural lands and our rural lifestyle. Data centers contradicts our continuous efforts to maintain our open lands for recreation and relaxation. While we are not against progress, we believe in sustainable developments that align with the community values and respect the environment.

We urge the El Dorado City Commission to reconsider allowing data centers in El Dorado, and instead explore alternative locations that are better suited for industrial use. We advocate for developments that protect our environment and sustain our small-town beauty. Perhaps focusing on renewable energy projects or eco-friendly businesses could serve as better options that support technological advancement without compromising the integrity of our community.

Please join us in protecting El Dorado. Sign the petition to let our leaders know that the character and essence of our town is worth fighting for.
