Stop cutting decade-old trees in Metro Manila

Stop cutting decade-old trees in Metro Manila
The Issue
In the heart of Metro Manila, where the bustling city never seems to sleep and the concrete jungle seems to expand endlessly, there are rare patches of green that have stood the test of time. These are the decade-old trees that not only add charm to the urban landscape but play a critical role in maintaining ecological balance. However, I am deeply distressed by the ongoing actions of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) that threaten these invaluable trees.
These trees have been more than just a part of the scenery; they are instrumental in cooling down our highly urbanized environment. Metro Manila is notorious for its sweltering heat, and these trees have been our natural allies in mitigating harsh temperatures. Their leafy canopies provide shelter from the sun, reduce heat by offering shade, and help maintain air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide.
Furthermore, these trees play a pivotal role in flood control. Their roots stabilize the soil, reducing runoff and helping manage stormwater—a critical function, given Manila's frequent encounters with typhoons and heavy rainfalls. The current decision to cut down these living pillars of environmental equilibrium puts our communities at a greater risk of floods.
Beyond their practical benefits, these trees are living witnesses to our history and culture. They have watched over generations, providing peaceful spots for reflection and becoming part of countless personal and communal memories. Removing them is like tearing out the pages of a book that tells the story of our shared past.
We understand that urban development is necessary; however, it must coexist with the preservation of nature. Sustainable development should be prioritised over sheer expansion, and we urge the DENR to cease the cutting of these precious trees and instead adopt urban greening initiatives. These may include relocating trees when absolutely necessary, increasing tree planting efforts, and developing policies that protect existing trees.
We call on the citizens of Metro Manila and environmental advocates to unite and raise their voices against the unnecessary destruction of our urban green spaces by signing this petition. Together, we can advocate for a Metro Manila that values both its growth and its environment. Please join me in urging the DENR to rethink its approach to our city's green legacy. Your signature can make a difference in preserving the natural heritage of Metro Manila for future generations.
