Petition for Increased Safety Measures and Transparency in Our Neighborhood

To: Canada Bay Council (Drummoyne)

We, the concerned residents of Drummoyne, are deeply troubled by the rising incidents of crime and safety concerns within our community. We firmly believe that every resident deserves to live in a safe and secure environment. Therefore, we call upon our local council to take immediate action to address these pressing issues, ensuring the safety of all residents and preserving the value of our neighborhood.

On the night of October 2nd, 2023, at approximately 2:45 AM, a terrifying incident occurred when a group of five individuals attempted to break into a residence in our neighborhood. Their faces were masked, and one of them carried a large knife. This shocking incident was captured on video recordings, which we believe would be truly traumatizing to the public if released. Only the swift response of one of the neighbors and their protective dog prevented a potential tragedy. Shockingly, this incident follows a similar attempted break-in at the same household just six months ago.

However, these incidents are not isolated cases. Numerous residents in our neighborhood have experienced a series of alarming events, including stolen vehicles, break-ins while they are inside their homes, and other criminal activities. We believe it is essential for our local council to investigate and document the extent of criminal reports within our vicinity, making this information accessible to the public. This transparency is our right as residents and can help us collectively address the issue.

We are deeply concerned that, on the night of the incident, it took the police car an hour to respond to our call, which is unacceptable in a situation where every minute counts in ensuring our safety.

We kindly request that our local council consider the following actions:

Increase Police OR Private Security Patrols: Allocate additional resources for regular police patrols in our neighborhood during high-risk hours, especially late at night and early morning between (1-5AM).

Provide Panic Alarms: Offer subsidized panic alarms or safety systems to all households in our community, serving as a crucial deterrent and peace of mind for residents.

Transparency on Criminal Reports: Conduct an investigation into the number of criminal reports in our neighborhood and make this information publicly accessible via a website. Sharing this data is crucial for informed decision-making and safeguarding our property values as well as our individual safety. This will also allow the residents to engage with other residents to discuss safety concerns, share crime prevention tips, and foster a sense of unity and vigilance among neighbors.

Enhance Street Lighting: Assess and upgrade street lighting in areas with inadequate illumination to deter criminal activities.

Proper Punishment:  Please update the current Justice System. It is way too lenient. These criminals should not be getting away with a slap on their wrist. 

By signing this petition, we demonstrate our commitment to creating a safer, more secure neighborhood for ourselves and our families. We call upon Canada Bay Council to prioritize the safety of its residents, investigate the extent of criminal reports, and work collaboratively with us to implement these measures.

We, the residents of Drummoyne, respectfully request that the council respond to our concerns and take immediate action to address these pressing issues.
