This week Google responded to public outrage on social media about their new calorie-counting cupcake on Maps by removing it. The pink cupcake icon was used to show how many calories would be burned and how many mini-cupcakes those calories equalled if users walked to their destination. Accused of being patronising, triggering, and out-of-touch, Google quickly removed the function. (The BBC reported on it here: http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-41651836 and the New York Times did so here: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/17/technology/google-maps-calories.html)
This is good news for us. These giant companies do respond to public pressure. But Google has yet to remove harmful cosmetic surgery games targeting children and commit to instituting a responsible policy regarding these “games”. Young children aren’t on Twitter or Facebook to protest, but adults can advocate for them.
We’re asking all of you to call on Google on Twitter and/or Facebook to act responsibly regarding their young users. And we need you to do it as soon as you can. There are more than 20,000 of you, so let’s make our voices heard!
If you’re on Twitter, please tweet one of these tweets, or even better all three:
TWEET ONE: Thx @Google for dropping calorie counting! Now take down kids’ surgery apps!

TWEET THREE: .@Google protected adults by removing calorie counter. What about kids? #OneMoreStepGOOGLE #SurgeryIsNotAGame [Your country’s PETITION LINK]
And if you are on Facebook, consider sharing this post with your friends:
Thanks @Google for responding to public outrage over the calorie-counting cupcake function on GoogleMaps. We now ask you to take it one step further and remove harmful cosmetic surgery apps aimed at children from GooglePlay and institute a responsible policy to regulate these apps. It is time Google took one more step towards ending body shame.

We thank each and every one of you for your ongoing support! Together we can make the World Wide Web a safer place for our children!
