A Swiss International Airlines Airbus A330-300, registration HB-JHL performing flight LX-18 from Zurich (Switzerland) to Newark,NJ (USA), was enroute at FL340 about 70nm southeast of London Heathrow,EN (UK) when the crew decided descend the aircraft to FL100 and turn around due to unusual odour in cockpit and cabin. The aircraft levelled off at FL100 about 15 minutes later and subsequently diverted to Paris Charles de Gaulle, where the aircraft landed without further incident about 50 minutes after leaving FL340.
The airline reported the aircraft diverted due to an unusual odour in cockpit and cabin.
The aircraft is currently still on the ground in Paris about 3 hours after landing.

‘A British Airways Airbus A380-800, registration G-XLEH performing flight BA-56 from Johannesburg (South Africa) to London Heathrow,EN (UK) with 429 people on board, was climbing out of Johannesburg's runway 03L when the crew stopped the climb at about FL280 reporting smoke in the cockpit as well as in the cabin. The airport immediately assigned runway 03L/21R for the emergency and kept the runway sterile. The aircraft returned to Johannesburg for a safe landing on runway 21R about 50 minutes after departure. The aircraft stopped on the runway, the crew shut the engines down and requested emergency services, who had been deployed in full force affecting operation of the airport (fire cover available), to check their aircraft. Emergency services reported everything on the aircraft looked okay. The aircraft was towed to the apron after about 45 minutes.
According to information The Aviation Herald received the occurrence was a "fume event". A number of members of the crew were complaining about dizziness and nausea and were sent to be assessed at a hospital. The aircraft had had a fuel leak about one week prior to that occurrence.
Passengers reported there was a burning odour in the cabin that became stronger and stronger, the crew told them about a hydraulics and landing gear problem.
The aircraft remained on the ground in Johannesburg for about 30 hours, then departed for the flight again as flight BA-56D and reached London with a delay of about 30:20 hours.’

We sincerely hope that no one suffers any long-term injury or disease which may manifest at a later date as a result of exposure to the toxic fumes.
Apart from the initial symptoms of exposure to aircraft oil or hydraulic fluid, which can include headache, nausea, dizziness, coughing, sore throat, itchy or sore eyes, confusion etc., (some acute poisoning symptoms to high levels of these toxic chemicals can be and have been far worse), which the aviation industry and governments accept and allow to happen to passengers and particularly to crew time and time again; more serious long term injury and disease can manifest weeks, months or even years after exposure.
This poisoning can also happen when people are exposed repeatedly because the effects, even at very low levels can be cumulative and the biological changes within the body insidious.
Any manifestation of injury or disease is dependent on the individual’s genetic and hormonal status as well as any biological changes that may occur after exposure.
Genetic status can include enzymes such as CYP450 in the liver which determine the body’s ability to process and eliminate the chemicals/toxins efficiently.
‘Whether low doses of EDCs* influence certain human disorders is no longer conjecture, because epidemiological studies show that environmental exposures to EDCs are associated with human diseases and disabilities. We conclude that when nonmonotonic dose-response curves occur, the effects of low doses cannot be predicted by the effects observed at high doses. Thus, fundamental changes in chemical testing and safety determination are needed to protect human health.’
