German organisation calls the 1st International Clean Cabin Air Day
The non-profit organisation “Patient Initiative Contaminated Cabin Air e.V” (P-CoC) calls for the "International Clean Cabin Air Day" on April 03, which will take place for the first time this Friday. On this day, P-CoC e.V. wants to draw public attention to the decades-old problem of contaminated cabin air. At the same time, industry and authorities are to be urged to finally take action and install already existing technical solutions. Within the framework of this day, an online conference is planned which will take place Friday evening together with international participants.
For many decades it has been known in the aviation industry that so-called fume events contaminate the air in the cabin. At Lufthansa Group there are at least 2 fume events daily - as announced by the airline at an EASA workshop January last.
The health consequences for crew and passengers are permanent brain, lung and nerve injury. This has already been confirmed in numerous medical studies, most recently by researchers at the UMG/ Göttingen running the "Fume Event Consultation Hour". Despite this, the German Transport Employer's Liability Insurance Association (BG-Verkehr) refuses both to offer quick first aid measures after fume events and to pay for the treatment of the injuries resulting from these accidents. Affected flight attendants and pilots fight for their rights in long and costly legal proceedings, often in vain.
In order to draw attention to the grievances surrounding the poisoned cabin air, the Nuremberg association has declared the 3rd of April to be the "International Clean Cabin Air Day".
"There are thousands of sick crew members worldwide, and more everyday. The industry and responsible authorities continue to deny any connection. Passengers are still not informed about fume events. There are no sensors installed, even though required by certification specification. This must change - Immediately!" demands Ekaterini Bary-Schueller, Vice Chairwoman of the ”Patienten Initiative”
The former Lufthansa Purser, who became permanently ill after several Fume Events, reports:
The seriously ill crew members are not only deprived of their financial livelihood, but are also denied medical assistance. There is a lack of medical contacts, trained specialists and therapy facilities".
The organisation extends an invitation to their online conference as part of the day. In an international Zoom conference the members of the organisation will discuss and develop common demands together with affected crew and worldwide activists. Originally, a demonstration was planned, which had to be cancelled due to the Corona crisis.
"The aviation industry would now have the unique opportunity to make structural changes to the aircraft in order to prevent bleed-air contamination in the future. We hope the industry will use the time without flight operations in a responsible way," Bary-Schueller urges.
