Information for those needing answers following a recent Fume Event onboard an aircraft or Continuous Low Level Exposure (Crew):
Hair Testing for VOC’s and Organophosphates found in aircraft oil -
‘Your hair grows an average of 1 cm per month. During its growth, the hair is irrigated at the root by blood vessels and they load with the compounds to which the body is exposed (by ingestion, inhalation, ...).
Hair is of interest to have a "memory", unlike other matrices such as blood, saliva and urine which can only be used to assess very recent exposure (at most a few days). Thus, a hair analysis can go back several months in the consumption or exposure habits.
Using a simple strand of hair, Kudzu Science analyzes the chemical elements incorporated and takes stock of your recent exposure level (from 1 to 3 months depending on the length of hair provided).’ - kudzscience.com

Separate test for VOC’s:

About these tests:
1. At present they can only be used as a reference or report until a legal case including one of these hair test results has been used and accepted in a court of law as evidence.
2. It is an easy way (particularly for crew) to check if they have any of the toxins in their body.
3. For those who maybe suffering symptoms of Aerotoxicity or feel that they are always ill and are constantly at their Doctors’ surgery but are getting nowhere - this might help the doctor to understand the root cause of their health issues.
4. When the results (copy) is given to your GP, it remains on your medical file which is important.
5. It might be helpful particularly for those who have been involved in a Fume Event - to do the test(s) a few weeks after a Fume Event exposure (when the hair has grown sufficiently) - in order for them to know what they were exposed to. It may also help to pin-point a particular exposure (for legal purposes) in the future.
6. It’s worrying that people may have been exposed to chemicals from aircraft oil or hydraulic fluid - particularly to TCP isomers because of the damage they can cause to health, but it is the actual results that matter - ie. How many times higher than the population average are your results compared to people who do not fly or do not fly often?, (as shown in the Population Average* on the results).
If the results are higher than PA* - it could mean your body is reaching the point of being unable to process and eliminate the toxins - which could lead to very serious health issues. If they are similar to the PA then it tells you that your body is still able to process and remove the toxins. Either way - it’s good to know. However, for some people (who are particularly sensitive to these toxins) any amount can be harmful.
It’s important to remember that some people are easily able to remove the toxins from their bodies, others are able to do it for a long time but sometimes (particularly in the case of crew and frequent fliers) they can build up and some people find it very difficult to remove them.
7. If the results are showing high amounts of chemicals from the results, or if your health is causing concern following exposure to fumes onboard an aircraft it would be wise to speak to your GP to discuss ways of removing the toxins (detoxification). If your GP is not trained in this field/doesn’t understand this type of poisoning (from contaminated air onboard aircraft) and is unable to help, go to the BSEM (British Society for Ecological Medicine) website to find a fully qualified practitioner who is trained, fully understands the problem and will be able to help.
