Frontier Airlines - Airbus A321-200
Registration: N715FR Flight Number: F9-1397
Cleveland/Tampa
Six passengers became ill. The passengers vomited and suffered nausea. The airline reported the cause of the illnesses was under investigation.

01 January
Indigo - Airbus A320-200
Registration: VT-INY Flight Number: 6E-6373
Delhi/Ahmedabad
Smoke in cockpit and cabin - emergency declared.
‘The airline reported an unusual odour onboard, which was determined to have been caused by a minor technical glitch, which was rectified before the next flight.’
The aircraft remained on the ground for about 5 hours then continued service.

02 January
Allegiant - Airbus A319-100
Registration: N332NV Flight Number: G4-14
Las Vegas/Grand Junction
It was determined that the airport had used sand to mitigate icing on the runway and sand was ingested during landing.
Two flight attendants went to hospital.
(No reports of any other aircraft ingesting sand that day).

Smoke in Cabin - Diverted to Phoenix.

03 January
American Airlines - Airbus A321-200
Registration: N103NN Flight Number: AA9240
Phoenix/New York JFK
Smoke in the cabin - Returned to Phoenix.
(This Flight was the continuation of the previous days AA10 which diverted).
The airline reported a similar problem occurred again, an electrical odour from the chiller, although maintenance had worked to resolve the problem.

Report of a fire indication - Diverted to New York JFK
‘The aircraft authority reported the aircraft diverted to JFK due to a fire indication. Emergency services checked the aircraft and found an overheated coffee pot a cause’.
NB. All aircraft catering equipment is Aviation Grade Certified and is protected from overheating.

06 January

Nuremberg/Hurghada (Egypt)
Smoke in cockpit - Diverted to Munich
‘Source of smoke was reported as an AFT galley oven. A fire extinguisher was discharged into the oven.’
NB. Smoke reported in the cockpit (Front Of Aircraft) from an oven at the Rear of the Aircraft.

10 January
American Airlines - Airbus A320-200
Registration: N604AW Flight Number: AA1897
Philadelphia/Fort Lauderdale
Unusual odour onboard - Landed Safety at Fort Lauderdale
Both Pilots and three flight attendants went to hospital.

11 January
WestJet - Boeing B737-200
Registration: C-GWAZ Flight Number: WS121
Calgary/Vancouver
Burning smell from Aft Galley - Landed safely in Vancouver and emergency services met the aircraft on arrival.
The Canadian TSB reported the operators maintenance found the hydraulic system was at 104% of its capacity and corrected it to the recommended 91% capacity.
NB. Hydraulic Fluid fumes in the cabin (Rear galley) - Google ‘Skydrol’ for more information of what the crew at the rear of that aircraft were exposed to.

14 January
Air Canada - Airbus A319-100 (From 19/12/18)
Registration: C-GAQL Flight Number: AC 202
Vancouver/Calgary
‘On climb out of Vancouver Flight Crew declared PanPanPan reporting the smell of smoke and an odour on the flight deck. Maintenance was unable to find the source of the problem and returned the aircraft to service.

17 January
Nordstar - Boeing B737-300
Registration: VP BKT Flight Number: Y7404
Norilsk/Moscow
Burning odour onboard followed by activation of a smoke detector.
Returned to Norilsk.
The West Siberian Investigation Department Of Transport reported the aircraft returned to Norilsk due to false trigger of a sensor.


21 January
Lufthansa - Airbus A321-200
Registration: D-AIWB. Flight Number: LH2135
Muenster/Munich
‘Flight Crew declared ‘Mayday’ reporting strong acid odour in the cockpit - Landed safely in Munich.
Emergency services could not observe anything out of the ordinary.

21 January
British Airways - Boeing B747-400
Registration: G-CIVO Flight Number: BA 213
London LHR/Boston
Alleged fumes in the cabin prior to landing at Boston. Air Safety Report completed by Flight Crew.
Allegedly the ground crew suggested it was probably de-icing fluid used on the runway entering the cabin via the air conditioning system (although the fumes were alleged to have been prior to landing). Aircraft was then turned around as usual for the return flight to London - see below:

21 January
British Airways - Boeing B747-400
Registration: G-CIVO Flight Number: BA212
Boston/London LHR
‘En route 100 nautical miles north of Moncton (Canada) the Flight Crew declared ‘Mayday’ reporting smoke in the cockpit’ - Returned to Boston.
Allegedly fumes in the cabin in also.
The aircraft had also developed a flaps drive fault.
11 crew were taken to hospitals.
The Canadian TSB reported ‘The fumes appeared to originate from a defect or contamination inside the air conditioning pack #2 (right hand). The pack was locked out in accordance with minimum equipment list requirements and the aircraft returned to Heathrow’ (No passengers onboard).

24 January
Air Transat - Airbus A321-200
Registration: C-GEZD Flight Number: TS 782
Quebec City/Fort Lauderdale
‘On preparation for departure the aircraft was being de-iced. A large number of passengers began to complain about feeling ill. 11 passengers were taken to hospitals. Emergency services found no issue with the cabin air quality. A ventilation problem during the De-icing is being suspected’.

24 January

Paris Orly/Pointe-A-Pitre (Guadeloupe)
Burning odour onboard - Diverted to Lajes (Azores).

28 January
Tarom - Avions De Transport Regional ATR-42-500
Registration: YR-ATE Flight Number: RO 275
Bucharest (Romania)/Thessaloniki (Greece)
Odour of oil onboard - Returned to Bucharest.
A first examination of the aircraft did not find evidence of a fault on board of the aircraft.

30 January
JetBlue - Airbus A320-200
Registration: N523JB. Flight Number: B6-198
Orlando/New York La Guardia
Fumes in Cockpit - Returned to Orlando.
Three crew and three passengers were examined by medical staff awaiting the aircraft. Passengers reported they had been exposed to “Dangerous Fumes”.
