When pilots smell fumes or ‘odours’ in the cockpit they can don an oxygen mask which provides them continuously with oxygen. Cabin Crew can don a smokehood (as shown in the video) which will supply oxygen for a minimum of 20 minutes.
What protection is there for passengers onboard an aircraft if there are ‘odours’ also known as fumes? The answer to that unfortunately is NONE - until now.
One of the best masks we have found so far is produced by The Cambridge Mask Co. We have received confirmation that this mask offers protection from VOC’s and ORGANOPHOSPHATES which are present in aircraft oil and do leak into aircraft cabins causing those very unpleasant odours otherwise known as FUMES which can be very harmful to human health - as confirmed in many scientific reports and studies.
Until airlines are forced by law to fit sensors and filters to their bleed air aircraft (or decide to commit to fitting them as Easyjet and Spirit Airlines have already done) to stop these contaminants from entering the air supply in aircraft we hope that more people will start protecting themselves when flying.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is the only commercial aircraft at this time not using the traditional bleed air system, but it does occasionally suffer with electrical fumes onboard, which can also be harmful to human health.
These masks are available from Angelfleet.net and also from Aerotoxic.org
