Stop construction on Wellington Street car park
The Issue
As a proud resident of Chadderton, Oldham, I am deeply concerned about the recent proposal to build four new dwellings on the Wellington Street car park, a space that has long served as a vital resource for our community. This proposal threatens not only our access to convenient parking but also the very essence of our neighbourhood's charm and connectivity.
For years, the Wellington Street car park has provided essential parking for local businesses, visitors, and residents alike. Eliminating this space to make room for residential development would create significant disruptions. Local businesses, which rely on the car park to attract customers from outside the immediate vicinity, would likely suffer a decline in foot traffic due to reduced parking availability. Additionally, residents who depend on the car park for day-to-day convenience would face increased inconvenience and frustration.
Importantly, Chadderton is a close-knit community where every shared space plays a crucial role in social interactions and local identity. Transforming this community hub into private residences undermines its role in fostering inclusivity and communal spirit.
The proposed dwellings, while addressing housing demands, do not justify dismantling existing infrastructure that benefits the wider public. Instead, we urge the council to consider alternative sites for such development—locations that do not directly impact the community's current amenities. We understand the need for housing but believe it should not come at the cost of our community’s shared resources and convenience.
We call upon the local council to preserve the Wellington Street car park and actively seek viable solutions that balance housing needs with community interests. A thorough review of other potential areas can result in meeting housing goals without compromising pivotal community assets.
Join us in voicing our opposition to this proposal and advocating for responsible, community-centric urban planning. Please sign this petition to protect our lifestyle, support local businesses, and preserve the charm of Chadderton, Oldham.
