The Issue

I remember quite vividly the distress and helplessness I felt when I needed to communicate with my parents about a sudden change in my after-school sports schedule. My phone was confiscated by school authorities, following a policy that allows the government to provide schools with the power to take our personal devices during school hours. This policy doesn't take into consideration the real needs of students today.

Many kids, like myself, rely on our personal devices to keep in touch with our parents and guardians throughout the school day. Whether it's to update them about an unexpected after-school plan or to request their presence when we're feeling down and need to be picked up, our devices are vital lifelines. The government officials who have enforced these rules did not grow up in the same environment of constant connectivity. They lack understanding of the critical role communication technologies play in our lives today.

The current policy that hands over control to schools—allowing them to confiscate our personal devices—needs to be reevaluated. It undermines our ability to communicate when it's essential, putting both students' safety and emotional well-being at risk.

We propose a new policy that respects students' rights to maintain access to their personal communication devices during school hours. Instead of outright confiscation, we advocate for a balanced approach that permits students to use their devices responsibly for personal communication, without interfering with academic integrity.

This isn't just about convenience; it's about ensuring safety, peace of mind, and effective communication channels between students and their families. Join me in urging our local government and educational institutions to reassess and modify these outdated policies. Please sign this petition to help restore our ability to stay connected with our loved ones when needed.
