The Issue

My daughter was horrifically attacked, a nightmare that every parent dreads. Her attacker was caught and confessed to the crime, providing a glimmer of hope for justice. However, when the sentence was handed down, it was a bitter blow. The man responsible received a 12-year sentence, but with three additional charges also laid against him, he will serve the time concurrently. This means, in essence, that he's only serving time for one crime, erasing the gravity of his other offenses.

This practice of concurrent sentencing in the UK can deeply undermine the sense of justice for victims and their families. It fails to recognize each crime's individual impact on the victims and allows dangerous offenders to spend less time behind bars than they would if sentences were served consecutively. Statistics from reputable sources suggest that offenders serving concurrent sentences can sometimes serve significantly less time, leaving victims feeling justice has been denied.

Reforming this system would ensure that justice is served fully, acknowledging the severity of each crime. A shift to consecutive sentencing for multiple offences would send a clear message that every crime is significant and will be punished accordingly. It respects the victims' suffering and acknowledges the multi-faceted impact of each offence.

We urge lawmakers and the justice system in the UK to reconsider the practice of concurrent sentencing. The law should ensure that sentences for multiple offenses are served consecutively to truly reflect justice for victims. This change would not only offer relief and a sense of justice to victims and their families but also act as a more effective deterrent to crime.

Please sign this petition to help bring about this vital change. Together, we can push for a fairer justice system that better serves victims and holds offenders accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Your signature can make a difference.
