When my own mother moved into a care home over seven years ago, I was hopeful that she would receive the quality care she needed without worrying about financial implications for her life and our family's future. Unfortunately, like many families in the UK, we are facing the heart-wrenching prospect of losing our family home once she passes away, just to cover the costs of her care.

Currently, the local council has been contributing to her care expenses. However, it comes with the grim caveat that they expect her house to be sold upon her death to repay the costs. This is not just our family's concern—it is a widespread issue affecting thousands of people across the nation. Elders who have worked all their lives to buy and maintain a home are forced to use their lifelong investments to fund essential care during their twilight years.

It is unjust and emotionally devastating to see the hard-earned assets of our elderly being liquidated to meet expensive care costs. More than 50,000 people in the UK every year have to sell their homes to pay for care. We need to advocate for reform in the current system to ensure every elderly person can receive the care they deserve without compromising their financial security and household legacy.

I am calling on the government to introduce legislation that prevents councils from using the value of a resident's property to recover care costs. Instead, a fair system could be established, where an equitable cap on payments is set or universal care is funded through progressive taxation.
