Chicago families are already stretched thin. Now ComEd is hiking our electric bills right as summer heat sets in. Starting this month, most customers will see an extra $10 or more on their monthly bill — not because we’re using more electricity, but because of something called a “capacity charge.”

ComEd says this fee helps prepare for future energy needs, but the truth is simple. We’re being charged more just for the possibility of using power during hot months. And there's no option to opt out. No transparency. No public say.

This increase hits hardest when people need air conditioning to stay safe and healthy. Low-income families, seniors, and those living paycheck to paycheck will suffer the most.

We call on the Illinois Commerce Commission and elected officials to step in. Stop the summer rate hike. Freeze these unfair charges now. Illinois families shouldn’t have to pay more just to stay cool and alive.
