Stop College Station land sale for Crypto mine

The Issue

Imagine living in College Station, TX, surrounded by the serene charm of our community. Now, picture this disrupted by the constant hum of a crypto currency mine. For those unaware, the city council is considering selling precious land for the development of a crypto currency mining facility, and the negative impact on our community could be substantial.

Firstly, these mining operations are notorious for their enormous electricity consumption. Our local electrical grid could face unprecedented strain, leading to more frequent outages and higher costs for households. Additionally, crypto mines require large amounts of water for cooling servers, threatening our already precious water supply.

Beyond utilities, there's the issue of noise pollution. The persistent noise generated by the operation of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of servers would be a constant background disturbance, affecting the peace and quiet we cherish in College Station.

Moreover, the promised economic benefits of such projects are often overstated. Crypto mines typically employ few people, offering limited job creation for locals while profiting company stakeholders elsewhere. Meanwhile, the environmental footprint and potential health risks due to the constant operation of machinery and increased carbon emissions cannot be ignored.

The heart of College Station is its community, a community that thrives on tranquility and sustainability. Selling land for a crypto mine threatens this balance and contradicts the values we hold dear.

It's crucial that community members come together to oppose this land sale. Urge the city council to reconsider and prioritize sustainable development that benefits everyone rather than a select few. Please sign this petition to protect the future of College Station, TX.

At this point, I am in support of the real estate contract. This is just part of the process. The user contacts the city and expresses interest. The city and the user sign an NDA so some terms of the contract can be hammered out. This, obviously, makes it so that the business can have time to work through some details. Then the real estate contract is proposed, but the deal is not done. There is time for public engagement and time for them to get a site plan in order etc. They would not take the time and resources to do this without a contract, otherwise it would be a waste. This is how real estate deals are done, no different than Costco or anyone else who buys city land. We are early yet. Plenty of time for folks to provide input. Citizens can make their voices heard at the 9/11 city council meeting. It begins at 6PM. Register with the city secretary to speak. This needs to be done by noon the day of.
