Stop City of Vancouver PERMANENT Comox Year-Round School Street Closure

The Issue

The survey for the residents of Comox Street and other close proximity streets to Lord Robert's Elementary is worded in such a way to make you believe it's already been decided for you - but we have been assured by the City, and the Chair or Lord Robert's Parent Association Committee that it is not yet a done deal!

The City of Vancouver along with a group of parents are pushing for permanent street closure of 1600 Block of Comox to convert it into “community space” in the West End.

This will impact residents with or without cars and or children in the surrounding streets. With a rippling effect of an increase in theft, vandalism and overall personal safety for even blocks further out.

The safety of the students & residents especially seniors is at stake. The security and comfort to access their front doors, on a well lit street at night. The increase to noise, trash and potential to have people more in the fringes of society to move into this area, like they have on Davie and Bute - who will clean all this up? This proposal is inviting an encampment for addicts, as every other COV community space downtown proves to do. Is VPD prepared to patrol Comox regularly each and every day?

The normal conveniences we’ve had up to now, the same ones that the parents will keep, while taking them away from us the residents surrounding Lord Roberts.

Questions to ask yourself:

Why are we encouraging children to play in the streets?
Will the street get used during rain and when the pavement is hot in summer with no shade?
Broken glass on Cardero side is a regular occurrence, what will Comox closure bring out at night- needles, tent city, addicts, alcoholics, used condoms, excessive garbage and violence all possibilities. Do you want to take the chance?
Come home from an event after a few drinks and have to use the alley - how safe do you feel?
Where will family and friends park when visiting - elderly parents/friends have to walk blocks possibly in the rain to visit?

We must act now!

Importance: If we don’t have our say on what happens to our street the decisions will be made by others who don’t live within the few blocks and will not be as impacted by the outcomes.
