The Issue

There is an epidemic of speeding drivers and people who consistently run red lights and stop signs in Pueblo. They endanger children, pets, pedestrians, and other law-abiding drivers with injury, death, and serious property damage.

In the attached image, yellow dots show injury accidents and red dots show fatal accidents in Pueblo Co. during the time period 2016-2022. Drivers have gotten even more aggressive and distracted over the past two years! (source: https://county.pueblo.org/public-works-department/pueblo-county-crash-record

We need to change the culture of speeding, distracted and aggressive driving to prevent an increase in deaths and injury from self-centered, mindless drivers. Pueblo is a small city and it doesn't take long to get from one place to another at the legal speed limit and while obeying right-of-way regulations.

How many times have you almost been hit by another driver swerving out of their lane, running through a red light, or purposely rolling through a stop sign or traffic circle?

We want the Pueblo Police Department to prioritize these type of traffic violations, and to take a no-compromise stance on enforcing the new cell phone restrictions in Colorado that take effect in 2025. The only way to change the driving culture in Pueblo in a positive way is to be just as aggressive in enforcing the existing laws as these drivers are aggressive in their driving habits.

The Pueblo Police have been too complacent in ignoring traffic offenders, which has allowed dangerous driving and its impacts to grow worse and worse. How many more people have to die, be seriously injured, or have catastrophic accidents before we decide something must change?

Let's ask Pueblo City Council and the chief of police to prioritize human enforcement and electronic enforcement using speed cameras and whatever technology is available to help us change the driving culture long-term. Let's take a stand and take action to make Pueblo the safe city most of us want it to be!
