Stop Chris Brown from Performing in South Africa: No Stage for Abusers!

Stop Chris Brown from Performing in South Africa: No Stage for Abusers!
The Issue
Women For Change calls on concert organisers 'Big Concerts', promoters, and the South African government to reconsider the decision to allow Chris Brown to perform in Johannesburg on 14 December 2024.
His concert is scheduled just days after the global commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, making this event a direct insult to the millions of women and girls affected by violence in South Africa and worldwide.
Chris Brown's History of Violence Against Women
Chris Brown has a well-documented history of violence towards several women. In 2009, he was convicted of brutally assaulting his then-girlfriend, Rihanna, a case that sparked global outrage. Despite his conviction, his troubling behaviour has continued, with multiple accusations of violence against other women, with 'Quiet on Set' Producers Announce the 'Chris Brown: A History of Violence' Documentary, which will premiere this October.
The Crisis of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide in South Africa
South Africa is in the midst of a GBV crisis, where femicide rates are five times higher than the global average. Many women and children live in constant fear, and the scars of violence run deep.
Allowing a man with such a history of violence to perform in South Africa, a country grappling with one of the highest rates of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) in the world, sends a harmful and dangerous message. Instead of glorifying individuals with a history of abuse, we must be empowering and supporting survivors.
We also raise serious concerns about how the Department of Home Affairs has granted a visa to a convicted abuser. As a nation committed to fighting GBVF, how can we justify providing a platform to someone with a known history of abuse? It is imperative that we send a message that South Africa stands with survivors, not perpetrators.
We call on all South Africans to unite and take a stand against GBVF by:
- Urging the organiser 'Big Concerts', concert promoters and sponsors to cancel the Chris Brown concert.
- Demanding that Home Affairs revoke Chris Brown's visa and prevent him from performing in South Africa.
- Standing in solidarity with survivors of GBVF by refusing to glorify those who have perpetrated abuse.
- Let us use this opportunity to show the world that South Africa will not tolerate violence against women in any form. Together, we can demand justice, respect, and safety for all women and girls.
