Stop Expansion Chicken Farm and Testing Facility at Utrecht University!
Stop Expansion Chicken Farm and Testing Facility at Utrecht University!
The Issue
We, the members of the Vegan Student Association Utrecht, vehemently oppose the proposed expansion of the chicken farm at Utrecht University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Starting next year, the university intends to escalate the number of chickens in a new enclosure from approximately 200 to a staggering maximum of 2,925, as an addition to their existing farm De Tolakker on the Science Park. These chickens would also be tested and/or experimented on.
Unfortunately, the University hasn't put out an official statement on the purpose or specifics of this proposed expansion. Party for the Animals Utrecht sent them a list of questions and concerns about this matter back in July 2023, but the University has not responded yet. Therefore, first of all, we would like to request more transparency from the University on this matter.
Our opposition to this expansion is based on three core concerns: animal cruelty, public health risks, and sustainability.
Animal welfare and testing
Firstly, animal welfare and wellbeing should be at the forefront of scientific research and educational practices. The proposed expansion raises ethical concerns regarding the potential distress and suffering experienced by these chickens used in agriculture and animal testing, often leading to painful, stressful, and short-lived lives.
Furthermore, the expansion to 2900 chickens would most likely bring the overall animal testing numbers of the UU up to pre-2014 levels. In 2014, the Wet op de Dierproeven (Law on Animal Tests) was created to aim to reduce the amount of animal testing. This expansion would counteract the progress that Utrecht University has already made and aims to make in this regard.

We urge the university to prioritize the well-being of these sentient beings and explore alternative, animal-free research methodologies that align with contemporary values.
Public health risks
In addition, public health risks are a significant concern when it comes to large-scale animal confinement. The potential spread of infectious diseases such as bird flu among densely populated chickens in an expanded enclosure poses a considerable threat not only to the animals but also to human health. Research indicates that such outbreaks can have severe implications for both poultry and public health. We encourage the university to consider this potential risk.
Sustainability
Furthermore, the proposed expansion represents an unsustainable practice in the broader context of environmental impacts. Industrial animal farming, including intensive chicken farming, is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating climate change. Expanding the facility would further contribute to carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide emissions, adding to the university's carbon footprint.
The university as an example
Lastly, in a world striving for sustainability and ethical treatment of animals, it is essential for educational institutions like Utrecht University to set an example. Large-scale animal farms are not aligned with the ideals of sustainability and compassion towards animals. Sustainable practices should be an integral part of research and education, promoting alternatives that respect all forms of life and contribute to a more sustainable future.
In conclusion, we urge Utrecht University to reconsider the expansion of the chicken farm and redirect their efforts towards humane, sustainable, and progressive research methods that prioritize animal welfare, public health, and align with their stated commitment to ethical and sustainable values.
We invite you to join us in urging Utrecht University to halt the expansion of the chicken farm and shift towards ethical, sustainable, and progressive research methods. Sign this petition and make your voice heard in support of animal welfare, public health, and a sustainable future.
Sincerely,
Vegan Student Association Utrecht
