Stop Chicago’s “Snap Curfew” — Don’t Criminalize Our Youth

The Issue

Mayor Brandon Johnson is right to veto the dangerous new “snap curfew” law. Passed by a narrow vote in City Council, this ordinance would allow the Chicago Police to suddenly declare curfews on teens — with as little as 30 minutes' notice — anywhere in the city. No court oversight. No meaningful community input. Just another tool to target young Black and Brown Chicagoans.

Let’s be honest: this isn’t about safety — it’s about control. There’s no real evidence that curfews prevent violence, but there’s plenty of history showing that giving unchecked power to police only leads to racial profiling, over-policing, and lawsuits that cost taxpayers millions.

We can’t let fear win. What our teens need are investments in their communities — safe public spaces, jobs, mentors — not curfews that tell them they’re the problem.

Stand with us to demand the City Council uphold Mayor Johnson’s veto. Tell alderpeople: Chicago’s youth deserve support, not surveillance.
