The Issue

I'm a resident of Virginia and I've reached my tipping point with the incessant taxation here, particularly the property tax imposed on vehicles. Virginia seems to have a tax for everything, and it's high time we reconsider this vehicular property tax. It feels unjust to be paying taxes on items that I already own and use daily, just for the privilege of owning them.

Many Virginians are struggling with the financial burden that comes with this tax. According to the Commonwealth of Virginia's Department of Motor Vehicles, there are over 8 million registered vehicles in the state (source: dmv.virginia.gov). This means millions are impacted by a tax that chips away at our hard-earned income every year.

The property tax on vehicles disproportionately affects middle-class and lower-income families. For these families, a vehicle is not just a convenience; it's a necessity for commuting to work, ferrying children to school, and carrying out everyday tasks. Yet, they are the ones who feel the pinch the most from this tax.

Moreover, Virginia's taxation laws are inconsistent with those of neighboring states like Maryland and Tennessee. In Maryland, for example, instead of an annual property tax on vehicles, they charge a one-time excise tax upon purchase. This approach alleviates the recurring financial strain on citizens, allowing them to budget more effectively and plan for other expenses without the looming annual tax burden.

I propose that Virginia adopt a similar system, either charging a one-time fee or significantly reducing the annual property tax on vehicles. This would provide significant fiscal relief to thousands of families, stimulate economic growth by increasing disposable income, and make Virginia a more attractive state for residents and businesses alike.

Join me in calling on Virginia legislators to put an end to this burdensome tax. It's time for Virginia to rethink its outdated taxation policies and align them with the needs of its residents. Please sign this petition to support a change that will benefit countless families across our state.
