Stop Chains from affecting Independent Businesses

Stop Chains from affecting Independent Businesses
The Issue
Petition to Stop Chain Chip Shop from Opening
Across from Independent Businesses in Middleton
We, the undersigned, are concerned residents, small business owners, and supporters of
independent trade in Middleton.
We strongly oppose the opening of a Mother Hubbard’s chain chip shop directly across from an
established independent fish and chip shop.
This isn’t just about competition – it’s about the survival of local, family-run businesses that have
served this community with heart, care, and quality for years. Chain outlets may bring a
recognisable name, but they also threaten to displace the character, charm, and unique offerings
that only independent businesses can provide.
Middleton doesn’t need more big chains – it needs:
■ Support for Local Businesses – We need policies and decisions that encourage independent
shops to open and thrive, not be priced out or pushed aside.
A Local Market Culture – A town
market with stalls, local food producers, and artisan traders would revitalise the area and bring the
community together.
Affordable Rents for Start-Ups – Rising rents make it almost impossible for
small businesses to get started. The council should work toward affordable rental schemes for local
entrepreneurs.
We call upon local councillors, planning authorities, and community leaders to:
1. Reject the application (or reassess the approval) for the new chain fish & chip outlet at this
location.
2. Prioritise independent businesses and local enterprise over corporate chains.
3. Promote and invest in town markets and schemes to reduce rent for start-ups and small traders.
Let’s protect the soul of Middleton and give our high street back to the people who live, work, and
invest in our town every single day.
Sign today if you believe in believe in supporting local.
