The issue

Living in Cessnock, NSW, I've felt the burden of continuously increasing council rates. Ours is a community rich in diversity, consisting of pensioners, senior citizens, and young families. We all strive tirelessly each month just to make ends meet. The recent announcement that the Cessnock Council intends to apply for a permanent Special Variation (SV) from the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART), leading to a staggering 39.9% cumulative rate increase, is not just unimaginable but genuinely alarming to many of us. On average an extra $1040.00 per year.

Such a significant hike can have devastating effects. For residents like myself, this proposed increase represents a substantial financial burden, especially when coupled with the already high cost of living and stagnant wage growth. Our local businesses, still recovering from the impacts of recent global and economic challenges, could also crumble under this additional financial weight.

Cessnock’s community is resilient, but we should not be forced to bear costs that threaten our financial stability and way of life. It is crucial for the local council to acknowledge the financial realities faced by its residents. Alternatives such as phased-in increases, cost reductions in other areas, or seeking additional state or federal assistance must be exhaustively explored before resorting to such drastic measures.

Moreover, transparency in the council's financial planning and spending is paramount. The residents of Cessnock deserve to know how their rates are being used, and this should be communicated clearly and regularly to ensure accountability.

Let's come together as a community and say no to the 39.9% rate hike proposal by Cessnock Council. Please sign and share this petition to urge Cessnock Council to reconsider this action and brainstorm alternative solutions that do not financially cripple the residents of our cherished community. Together, we can make our voices heard and protect the welfare of all Cessnock residents.
