The Issue

On January 23rd, 2026, Mezcla, the Latin restaurant and cocktail lounge on Summit St and 3rd Ave, was struck by a driver, causing substantial damage to the building. This is one of many similar occasions over the past several years of treasured local businesses being driven into by autos.

These incidents are commonplace at many of the intersections along Summit and 4th St. They have not only caused significant property damage but have also endangered the lives of pedestrians, residents, and business owners in the area. These unfortunate events highlight the pressing need for more effective safety measures to be implemented immediately.

Statistical data from recent traffic reports indicate that intersections like Summit and 4th St are highly prone to accidents due to excessive speeding and inadequate traffic control measures. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 25% of car crashes in urban areas occur at intersections. Summit and 4th St are known offenders and are among Columbus' "High Injury Network" streets.

To minimize these risks, we propose the addition of:

  1. Improved sight lines (move parking further back)
  2. Tactical urbanism traffic-calming devices
  3. Hardened barriers along critical sections of intersections, such as bollards or concrete planters. Critically, these barriers must effectively be strong enough to stop cars from hitting buildings or people.

Additionally, we strongly encourage the city to implement further long-term, high-impact safety solutions such as returning Summit and 4th to 2-way traffic and redesigning lanes and intersections to slow cars down to neighborhood-appropriate speeds. These measures have been proven effective in various cities across the country.

Furthermore, it's critical that the city takes serious steps to address the pervasive traffic violence issue effect our city, which is trending nationally as ever-larger vehicles move at high speed through neighborhoods such as ours. Every time a car hits a building or person at a speed high enough to cause destruction, that is a choice that our leaders de facto endorse. Let's change the trend and make it known that Columbus residents deserve streets that serve them.

We urge the city council and city authorities to take immediate action to safeguard our community by implementing these proposed measures. Your signature on this petition will support our call for a safer Summit and 4th St, ensuring safety and peace of mind for all who live, work, and pass through the area daily. Let's make our voices heard and drive change before more lives and local treasures are put at risk. Sign our petition now.

Department of Public Service
Department of Public Service
Columbus, OH
Responded
The Department of Public Service has several active or recently completed projects along the Summit Street and N. 4th Street corridors, with an investment of at least $13 million to enhance safety for all who travel along these streets. These projects include: - Summit St Signals Phase 1 o $3.6 million project to upgrade traffic signals to provide better visibility. This project included curb extensions to shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians. - Summit St Signals Phase 2 o $2.4 million project to upgrade traffic signals to provide better visibility. - 4th St Signals o Estimated $3.8 million project to upgrade signals to provide better visibility. Construction is expected to start later this year. - N. 4th St and E. 5th Ave Bike and Safety Improvements, a $1.9 million project set for construction this year: Reconfigure E. 5th between Wall St and N. 5th St to a 3-lane section to reduce left-turn and rear-end crashes and slow driver speeds. This project will also reconfigure the intersection of Summit St. and E. 5th Ave. to improve the intersection layout. Reconfigure the bike lane and parking area on N. 4th St so that the bike lane is protected and parking is placed closer to the travel lanes. - N. 4th St at E. 19th Ave Signal Installation o Construction was completed in 2025 on this $1.2M project to install a traffic signal with sidewalk improvements, new ADA curb ramps and enhanced crosswalk markings. The project also rebuilt E. 20th Ave east of N. 4th. In addition, the Department of Public Service is working on other transportation safety improvements in the area, such as painted curb extensions at some intersections to better define turning movements and shorten crossing distances. We will continue to monitor and investigate transportation safety issues that arise in the area. Public Service leads the Vision Zero Columbus initiative to end all serious and fatal crashes on our city streets. Projects such as these on Summit St and N. 4th St to change the built environment are advancing us toward that goal. Yet, it will take everyone doing their part to achieve zero crash deaths, and that includes choosing safe driving behaviors to prevent crashes such as the recent one at Summit St and E. 3rd Ave.
