Stop Carlsbad from replacing local businesses with high‑rise housing

Stop Carlsbad from replacing local businesses with high‑rise housing
The Issue
Growing up in Carlsbad, I have cherished the unique charm and character that our village offers. Places like Choice Juicery and Crackheads are at the heart of this distinctive appeal. Whether it's grabbing a fresh juice before a beach walk or enjoying a lively trivia night with friends, these small businesses epitomize the spirit of our community. Unfortunately, these businesses are currently under threat as plans are underway to replace them with high-rise housing.
The proposal to build high-rise housing in our quaint village not only jeopardizes these beloved establishments but also threatens the small-town atmosphere that we, as locals, hold dear. It's distressing to see modern developments swallowing up areas of our town, and it's unnecessary to introduce the same architectural changes into the heart of our village. Carlsbad has seen enough new housing developments around its outskirts; our village shouldn’t face the same fate.
There's ample evidence suggesting that maintaining small businesses over new housing developments offers significant long-term benefits, both culturally and economically. According to the American Independent Business Alliance, communities with a higher density of local businesses have stronger local economies. Moreover, these businesses create a sense of place and belonging, fostering community ties that are fundamental to any vibrant village.
There is also the issue of new building creating more issues on the already problematic parking situation of the village. Throughout the year, but especially during the summer, parking is practically nonexistent in the village and surrounding areas. The new build claims to bring in nine new parking spots, but will that be anywhere near enough to accommodate all of the new traffic such a large building will bring.
Let’s not replace the heart and soul of Carlsbad with generic high-rises. I urge you to sign this petition to voice our collective concern to the Carlsbad City Council. This is a call for action to save Choice Juicery and Crackheads, and to protect the charm of our community. Together, we can ensure Carlsbad remains a place where local businesses thrive and the small-town spirit prevails. Please sign and help us preserve the cherished fabric of Carlsbad Village.
