This is what’s happening and anyone going to and from work every day will feel a deep pocket impact. A pilot program aims to find new ways for the state to pay for road maintenance by charging drivers for the amount of miles driven. Gas tax revenues are starting to dry up with the rise of electric vehicles on the road. Caltrans is now enrolling people in a six-month pilot program to test out the concept of charging drivers about 3 cents per mile.

This hits home because I live in California, and this added cost will disproportionately affect low-income families who rely on their vehicles for daily commutes. The financial burden will be significant, especially when combined with other living expenses that are already high in our state.

We need alternative solutions that do not unfairly target those who can least afford it. Sign this petition to urge Caltrans and our state legislators to reconsider this mileage-based fee program and explore more equitable funding methods for road maintenance!
