Stop California from Killing Mountain Lions in the Name of Wildlife Protection
The Issue
California mountain lions are majestic, elusive, and essential to the ecosystems they roam. But now, under a new policy, wildlife officials are allowed to euthanize these protected cats if they are seen as a threat to endangered bighorn sheep.
While protecting bighorn sheep is important, killing mountain lions is not the answer.
Predator and prey relationships are natural and have existed long before humans drew boundary lines on maps. But instead of investing in long-term, science-based conservation that protects both species, California is choosing a reactive approach that allows one protected animal to be sacrificed for another.
This petition calls on the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and state legislators to:
- Pause the current policy authorizing the killing of mountain lions
- Invest in non-lethal, science-backed strategies like relocation, better fencing, and habitat separation
- Launch a transparent public review process before further lethal actions are approved
Animal lovers and wildlife experts agree — we should not have to choose between saving one species and killing another. Conservation should be about coexistence, not conflict.
Sign this petition if you believe mountain lions deserve protection, humane treatment, and conservation policies that respect all life.
