Stop- bullying in our schools. As parents we are responsible to be there voices.
The Issue
Hello my name is Jessica Chandler and I have two children who attend Sandy run K-8 school they have been going there since preschool and I have always talked and thought highly of the school but in recent years I have slowly noticed the change that is taken place in what I viewed as a very respectful and safe place for my children to attend. My daughter is fourteen years old and she is a smart beautiful young lady who has always held her head high until a couple months ago I started noticing her attitude about herself change. Little things were happening on a daily basis that started concerning me. She would say mamma I'm ugly, noone likes me, there's so many things I need to change about myself. These were alarming to me as a mom. So I noticed she was constantly trying to change her body and how she looked. I noticed she was just not happy with herself anymore so I started having conversations with her and trying to let her know what I saw, a bright beautiful smart young lady, but my words didn't seem to help. Well about a week ago I get a text from her saying she can't handle it anymore, I texted her back and got no response, I was so scared for the safety of my child. I called the first person I knew could get to her and fast, her substitute teacher, I explained that Maddie was in the bathroom and was apparently bullied that morning could she please check on her, she said she would that she would and she had me on speaker due to her phone being damaged. When she reached the bathroom all I could hear was my child crying, my heart hurts for her because I couldn't get to her, I did speak with her and told her that she needed to go back to class because I have taught my children you can't run from your problems you have to face them. So she returned to class only to feel embarrassed and ashamed for something she didn't do. In the meantime I spoke with the principal and assistant principal and explained everything to only be left feeling as if what happened to my child was nothing and that it wasn't bullying that was happening to her. They never would admit that it was a form of bullying. So now me as a mom, and as that kid that once was also bullied, I want to stand up and be the voice for every child that is experiencing some type of bullying, weather physically, or mentally, or both. We need to make a stand to let the schools know that we as parents are not gonna tolerate our children being bullied. I know it will take more then one of us, so please make a stand with me to make a change in our children's lives. Thanks Jessica
