The Issue

At the Anoka Tree Lighting event, my toddler, husband, and I found ourselves standing next to live reindeer when the fireworks display began. The sudden, explosive sounds were terrifying for the animals, and their reactions were terrifying for us. We watched in horror as the reindeer, clearly petrified, attempted to escape. They slammed into the sides of their enclosure, collided with one another, and made desperate attempts to leap out. We feared not only for the reindeer's wellbeing but also for our safety, as the potential for being trampled was very real.

This incident made it clear to us that including live reindeer in such events is not only distressing for the animals but also poses a significant safety risk to attendees. The loud noises, bright lights, and bustling human activities are far from the peaceful, natural environment these creatures need. Using live reindeer as part of festive displays does not align with humane and ethical treatment of animals.

Reindeer, like all animals, deserve to be treated with respect and care. Instead of live reindeer, the Anoka Tree Lighting event could continue to feature alternative attractions that are both safe and enjoyable for all attendees.

Events similar to this have successfully replaced live animals with other engaging activities without compromising on festive spirit. Interactive light shows, music performances, or even digital displays featuring reindeer can bring joy to both children and adults alike, safeguarding the wellbeing of all involved.
