Stop Book Bans in Schools to Preserve Freedom of Speech and Education
The Issue
I am part of the generation that is currently being affected by the restriction of freedom of speech and education through book bans in schools. This is not just an issue for me alone, but for my peers, for the dynamic and diverse youth who are being denied rightful and necessary resources.
Book bans in schools prohibit us from expanding our perspectives and deepening our understanding of various subjects, people and tribulations. According to a report by PEN America in 2021, there have been at least 1,156 book ban incidents in schools across the United States. This widespread censorship limits our capacity to think critically, engage empathetically, and evolve intellectually.
At the heart of this issue is Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which asserts that everyone has the right to the freedom of opinion and expression. Denying us access to books undermines this fundamental right.
We must no longer tolerate this campaign against knowledge and thought empowerment. Every voice counts in this fight, hence we are seeking your support. Sign this petition to urge educators, stakeholders and policymakers to stop book bans in schools to uphold freedom of speech and the quality of education.
