Stop BC Housing on 2365 2371 Kelly Ave Port Coquitlam
The Issue
Your voice matters. Help us call for transparency, safety, and accountability before it's too late. Contact our MLA Mike Farnworth at mike.farnworth.mla@leg.bc.ca
THE ISSUE:
A new BC Housing project is being planned for Kelly Avenue, near downtown Port Coquitlam. It’s set to begin construction this fall. The development will house up to 90 individuals with various mental health challenges. The project will be operated by New View Society.
We believe in supporting those who need assistance but also value and respect the community's needs for community safety, transparency, and public trust.

WHAT’S MISSING?
Despite requests, officials have not answered critical questions, including:
- How will tenants be screened/criteria? New View advised they will not be excluding those with criminal justice involvement or addiction issues
- How will safety be ensured for residents, families, and local businesses?
- Why was this location—next to schools, parks, and homes—chosen
- Where is the evidence that New View can manage such a large building?
We’ve been told to “trust the process,” but no guarantees have been provided. And at least one resident from a known low-barrier, harm reduction shelter (Gordon Ave) is already confirmed to be moving in.
COMMUNITY VOICES
- “We chose this neighbourhood for our kids. We didn’t sign up for this.”
- “I work with this population—I know how complex the needs are.”
- “We support mental health initiatives, but not at the risk of local safety.”
- “No data has been shared. Just trust us? That’s not good enough.”
WHY WE’RE ASKING TO PAUSE THIS PROJECT:
- Too close to schools, parks, and family homes
- No clear criteria to screen for suitable residents
- First time New View is managing a site this size, with no proven track record
- Community was not properly consulted
- Parking issues remain unresolved
- No data shared on safety, operations, or success rates
We want supportive housing done right!
WHAT WE’RE ASKING FOR:
- A public town hall meeting with clear answers
- Data and evidence of New View’s ability to operate safely
- Transparency about who will live in this building
- A review of alternative locations that better support everyone’s needs

FINAL WORD
We support mental health and affordable housing, but the process matters. We need to protect the families, children, and businesses that make this community strong.
This isn't about “us vs. them.” It’s about doing things the right way, with facts, planning, and real community input.
Let’s pause this build until we get real answers.
Keep sharing. Keep asking questions. Keep speaking up.
