The issue

I'm a passionate gamer and believe video games are powerful tools for storytelling, creativity, and connection. However, the Australian government has taken a stance that threatens to stifle this vibrant medium. Recently, a new Halloween game set for release was banned—not for excessive violence or gore but simply because it portrayed a character using cannabis for healing. This decision reflects a concerning trend of disproportionate censorship that punishes game developers and limits consumer choice.

In Australia, our government has established a reputation for imposing strict censorship laws that impact the gaming community. In 2022, it was noted that the Australian Classification Board declined to classify more than 15 video games for reasons that seemed excessively stringent and out of touch with how other Western countries handle game classification. While the intent may be to protect, it often translates into a denial of adult gamers' rights to engage with diverse content responsibly.

This trend not only hampers the gaming community, which thrives on new and innovative experiences, but also hurts the gaming industry by forcing developers to either alter or completely shelve their projects for fear of non-compliance. This not only drives creative talent away from our shores but also denies us the benefits of being in tandem with global cultural dialogues shared through games.

It is essential for Australia to revise its approach to the classification of video games, aligning with international norms where adults' rights to choose their entertainment are respected. This includes establishing a classification system that is clear, reasonable, and facilitates a thriving marketplace for diverse storytelling.

Australia, despite being a relatively small market, is no minor player on the global stage. Aligning our policies with those seen in regions like North America and Europe will benefit both creators and consumers. Let's encourage the protection of children through parental guidance and education rather than restrictive and alienating bans.

Join me in calling on the Australian Government to stop banning video games for trivial reasons and establish a fairer, more open and realistic games classification system. Sign this petition to promote creativity, freedom of choice, and a vibrant gaming culture in Australia.
