Stop Bahamas Electrical Grid Giveaway to Pike Corporation

The Issue

The Bahamian People are the beneficial owners of the Bahamas Electricity Corporation (BEC) and its subsidiary Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd (BPL);  so they should have the greatest say as to how the company should be managed, divested or sold.

In June 2024, the Government of The Bahamas announced that they have  created a Special Purpose Vehicle called Bahamas Grid Company to which it plans to transfer 100% of the New Providence Electrical Grid.   They have given sixty percent (60%) of The Bahamas Grid (SPV) company to Island Grid Solutions Company, a subsidiary of Pike Corporation of North Carolina USA; and the remaining forty percent (40%) to BPL.

Additionally, the Davis Administration has signed a twenty-five (25) year Management Contract with Island Grid Solutions and Pike Corporation for the Management of the Transmission and Distribution  (T&D) of Electricity in the Bahamas, and essentially the management of the entire BEC/BPL Corporation.

What is bad about all of this is that they have given the People's Corporation over to a foreign entity without any consultation with the Bahamian People as mandated by the URCA Act, which is the governing authority for BEC. Any Government may determine that, in the best interest of the people’s assets, it may need to purchase technical and or management  expertise, and following the legislative authority, after consulting with the people, purchase the needed expertise. Such a course of action would not require handing over the majority shares in the People's Corporation to the company from which it is purchasing the aforementioned expertise.

The Davis Administration has broken multiple laws and disregard its own policy, and the Rule of Law to secure this deal to 'Special Interests' and has not secured Legislated Authority' to carry out this operation.   Yet they are pushing forward quickly and without respect to the Bahamian people, the staff, management & Unions of BEC/BPL;  to achieve the dismantling and divestment of the Corporation's shareholdings, and the complete death of democracy and good governance in The Bahamas.

The Bahamas Constitution Party (BCP) and other stakeholders have applied to the Supreme Court of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to stop this illegal operation, with an Emergency Injunction, in order to restrain the Government from robbing the Bahamian people of their inheritance.
