Stop Autism Misinformation and Stigma in Media and Online

Stop Autism Misinformation and Stigma in Media and Online
The Issue
We are calling on governments, media outlets, and social media platforms to take urgent action against the spread of misinformation and harmful narratives about autism.
Why this matters
Autistic people deserve respect, accurate information, and inclusion. Yet every day, harmful myths and exploitative content are being shared online and in the media. These myths fuel stigma, discourage acceptance, and harm both autistic people and their families.
The problem
False causes and cures: Decades of research show that vaccines, paracetamol, and everyday vitamins do not cause or cure autism. Yet misleading claims about these supposed “causes” and “miracle cures” continue to circulate, frightening families and giving false hope.
Exploitative and mocking content: Some influencers and content creators use autism as a “trend” or joke, trivialising the reality of the condition. This harms autistic people by spreading stereotypes and making light of real struggles.
Fear-based messaging: Some organisations and campaigns have historically promoted autism as something to be feared or eradicated, instead of listening to and empowering autistic voices.
What we are asking for
Accurate representation in media: News outlets must stop promoting discredited links between autism and vaccines, medicines, or miracle cures.
Action from social media platforms: Platforms should remove harmful and mocking content about autism and instead promote content created by autistic voices.
End fear-based campaigns: Charities and organisations must work with autistic-led groups and commit to respectful, inclusive messaging.
Support autistic voices: Policies and campaigns must centre the perspectives of autistic people themselves.
Our vision
A world where autism is understood as part of human diversity, where autistic people are respected, and where misinformation and fear no longer shape the public conversation.
