Petition updateSTOP Attacks on Affordable Rental Housing by Developers in MississaugaNotice of City Public Meeting for Tannery house

20 Oct 2021

The City has scheduled a public meeting for October 25, 2021 at 6 pm to approve NYX’s development application.

Purpose of Meeting: Planning and Building staff will present a report addressing issues raised and will provide a recommendation on the proposal. The Planning and Development Committee will make a decision about this project at this meeting.

Things continue to be very difficult at Tannery house in every way. The head tenant continues to try to defend herself (not all listed):

The tenant’s human rights case began moving forward at the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario on about September 9, 2021;

The Landlord’s application for a no fault eviction continues at the Landlord Tenant Board. The next hearing is scheduled for December 9, 2021 at 1pm;

The City’s online public materials do not indicate any interest in saving Tannery house, preservation of affordable housing, replacement housing, inclusionary zoning or other issues raised by residents. The report is available at:

http://www.mississauga.ca/portal/cityhall/planninganddevelopment

The City’s notice says remediation of on-site contamination will be evaluated. Tenants at Tannery house were prevented from knowing about a mandatory Record of Site Condition (RSC) certificate recently discovered via an updated publication of City property information during April 2021.

This RSC certificate was supposed to have been filed by the landlord for 51 Tannery St. location before land use changed from commercial/industrial to residential use, alleged to have violated environmental law(s). This enabled the Landlord to raze land at 51 Tannery quickly, interfering with advancement of legal rights from 2016-2021.

By-laws and other laws are alleged to have been broken. The only remedy appears to be to continue to pursue various available legal channels, which have been ongoing.

Please support residential renters, share your views for the preservation of saving Tannery house, affordable housing, inclusionary zoning: at the least, all new developments ought to include 30% replacement of rental units.

The public meeting on October 25, 2021 at 6 pm will be held in person and online. Advance registration is required to attend in person due to limited seating. Written submissions/comments are accepted by email at deputations.presentations@mississauga.ca

The proceedings will be streamed live for the public at the following link: http://www.mississauga.ca/portal/cityhall/council-and-committee-videos If you wish to phone in to listen to the meeting only, please call 905-615-3200, ext. 4915 for instructions.
