The tree lined walkway between King George Boulevard and Fraser Highway underneath the skytrain tracks is dark, unkempt and overgrown.  If followed west it traverses a large portion of the expo line course into vancouver. But in this small 100 yard length it walks beside quibble creek, a heritage salmon bearing water way. 10 years ago I bought an apartment some 50 feet overlooking this urban creek, it's unique charm appealing to me.

But what is even more unique to this pathway and creek is the amount of crime, dumping and general chaos that gravitates to it.  My neighbor and I are first responders and weekly, sometimes daily we are forced to call emergency services to that exact walkway for overdoses, health emergencies, fires, extraordinary dumping and pollution of the creek.  This year we have seen an escalation. Our building had a string of break ins, the burglars escaping through the path, and found countless overdosing individuals on the path.  Our building and small community was at it's wits end and thought it couldn't get any worse...

But it did. On July 10th a woman was robbed and sexually assaulted which happened within those 50 feet of my window where I slept. I was startled by a scream that night, I am now horrified to think was the victims. I awoke to police using megaphones to direct pedestrians after the crime shortly after.  You can imagine my shock knowing this occurred and I could have assisted the victim. My neighbors and family are disturbed to the core. This should not happen anywhere and we are determined to ensure the safety of our residents, neighbors and anyone passing by.

But what can we do?  Not everyone knows the nature of this pathway.  Not everyone is able bodied enough to use alternative routes as this is the designated sidewalk to the road, elsewhere obstructed by construction.  We can demand the owner of this property secures the safety of the public by properly maintaining it. What ordinairly would not be requested of a property owner is in fact required given the volume of pedestrian traffic on this path. This property is City of Surrey and Translink Skytrain property. In comparison to all other lengths of footpaths along the skytrain, I personally have not seen anything as unkempt and pose such serious public safety risks as this. So why is it different? Because the end of the tracks stop here? Because the neighbourhood is low income and thus low priority?

The answer: It doesn't matter, it shouldn't be.

So let's demand that change and do everything in our power to ensure this never happens again.  Below is how you can contribute.

By signing this petition, we will be demanding from the City of Surrey and Translink Skytrain:

▪To adequately light the entirety of BOTH foot paths

▪Remove all overhead tree boughs which obscure lighting from the creekside of the fence

▪Remove all brush and black berry bushes between path and road and maintain visibility of footpath from road on an ongoing basis

▪Remove refuge and clean graffiti in a timely manner

▪Seal off holes in fences between properties and waterways to thwart getaway routes for criminal acts

▪Impliment and share publicly with local residents the regularity at which these tasks will be performed and a schedule for major projects

It's not exactly justice but it is a large deterrent for future injustice.
