The Issue

As a resident and frequent visitor to Ashford town centre, I've witnessed firsthand how vibrant and essential our local businesses, restaurants, and shops are to our community. However, the recent proposal by the Green Party/Ashford Independent Party coalition administration which  runs Ashford Borough Council to increase car parking charges and abolish free parking after 6pm threatens the very lifeline of our town’s economy. Increased parking charges will inevitably deter visitors from coming to Ashford, leading to reduced foot traffic, which is critical for the survival of these small and often struggling enterprises.

The Conservative councillors on Ashford Borough Council are totally opposed to these increases  and to the abolition of free parking.

Ashford is not just a collection of businesses; it is a thriving community where families, friends, and neighbours gather to support one another. Local shops provide unique products and heartfelt service that cannot be matched by big online retailers or shopping centres. By raising parking fees, the council is indirectly pushing visitors away from experiencing what makes Ashford unique and beloved.

Consider this: many residents from surrounding villages rely on driving into town for their daily needs. The increased cost will discourage them from making those trips as often, forcing them to find alternatives that could lead to a slow but sure decline in Ashford's economic vibrance. Additionally, as businesses lose revenue, they may no longer afford to remain open, leading to a cascade of empty storefronts and a less inviting town centre.

There are alternative solutions the council could explore that would support the town’s sustainability without increasing parking fees. For instance, introducing a tiered parking system that offers the first hour free could help maintain foot traffic while still generating revenue. Another solution could involve improving public transportation links, ensuring that people have affordable and convenient ways to access the town centre without relying solely on their cars.

For Ashford to continue thriving and to preserve the livelihoods of our business owners and the vibrancy of our community, it is crucial that these proposed parking fee hikes are halted. Let's come together to show the council that we care deeply about the future of our town.
