I grew up in a peaceful neighborhood in Denmark, where the sound of children laughing was an everyday melody. But recently, the presence of heavily armed police officers patrolling our streets has become a disturbing norm, instilling fear rather than safety.

This change in policing has taken a toll on our community’s mental health and unity. Children who once played freely in the parks now shy away, intimidated by the sight of armed patrols. The trust between the community and law enforcement has been eroded, as residents feel more like suspects than protected citizens.

Statistics show that countries like Iceland and Norway, which adopt a less militarized approach to policing, experience lower crime rates. Yet, Denmark’s focus appears to lean towards increasing its police firepower rather than investing in community-based strategies that have proven to be more effective for crime prevention.

We call for the Danish government to reevaluate its current policy of arming police forces. Instead, prioritize training in conflict de-escalation, expand mental health resources, and promote community policing models that reinforce trust and cooperation. By doing so, we can ensure that our neighborhoods remain safe, supportive places for everyone.
