Stop Amazon from Listening In: Save the Echo Privacy Option!

The Issue

Amazon is planning to remove the "Do Not Send Voice Recordings" option for Echo devices starting March 28th, 2025. This violates the privacy expectations of countless Echo users who chose these devices with the understanding that they could opt out of sending voice data to Amazon's servers.

Removing this option takes away their right to control what happens with personal conversations at home.

Why does Amazon even need all of our recordings?

They claim this change supports new AI features, but privacy should never be sacrificed for added functions. Customers deserve the right to opt out of sharing voice data while still using the Alexa features they paid for.

The opt-out feature is crucial for those who value privacy, including families, individuals with disabilities, and anyone who doesn’t want their data processed remotely. Now people must choose between privacy and key Alexa functions — an unfair choice.

A Reddit user says, "As a blind person this is really frigging angry-making as voice control of apps is especially useful and important in terms of access."

We call on Amazon to respect consumer choice and privacy by preserving the "Do Not Send Voice Recordings" option.
