Qld's "gay panic" defence – almost abolished...
The disgraceful "gay panic" defence is almost abolished in Queensland.
I've just received a message via the shadow Attorney General, LNP, indicating that the LNP is offering bi-partisan support to the new government in getting rid of the gay panic defence – a huge step towards victory for our 225,000-strong petition!
Here's a media article with the LNP's announcement of support http://www.qnews.com.au/lnp-backs-critical-gay-law-reform-places-the-ball-in-labors-court/
I started this petition over two years ago now after having a man killed in my churchyard – and the attacker trying to use the "gay panic" defence to get a reduced sentence.
The killer's argument was "yeah, I killed the guy, but what he did to me was worse". That laws like this are still on the books in Queensland is a disgrace, and only legitimise hate and discrimination against gay and lesbian Qlders.
It needs to be abolished right away.
Perhaps you could help by emailing the new Attorney-General to congratulate them on this position and asking the Attorney General to bring forward the laws as a priority, to end the "gay panic" defence as soon as possible.
Email in here: attorney@ministerial.qld.gov.au
I also think it is great to give congratulations to the shadow Attorney General for the revised stance by the opposition. mansfield@parliament.qld.gov.au.
This is great news.
It needs to be a priority for this opportunity to finally end the "gay panic" law in Queensland may slip away.
Thanks for all your support.
