Hi everyone, Father Paul Kelly here.
Finally after over three years of campaigning, the Queensland Government has announced they will change the law and remove the 'gay panic' provocation defence for murder.
I am so thrilled that we will finally get rid of this bigoted and barbaric law!! This win is thanks to all of you who signed my petition, raised your voice and kept the pressure on.
In 2008 a man was killed in my church courtyard. I was so shocked when in 2010 this 'gay panic' provocation was used in court to argue for manslaughter not murder. I couldn't believe such a law even existed. Now, with this new government coming in we can finally see the end of this unjust provocation defence.
The Government has not given a timeframe for when they will do this so we must keep the pressure on.
Please join me in congratulating the Attorney General Yvette D'Ath on committing to bring in this legislative change and encourage her to make sure it is a priority for her Government.
You can post a comment on her Facebook page here https://www.facebook.com/yvetteforredcliffe?fref=ts
Thanks again for you ongoing support - we are almost there!
Yours
Father Paul Kelly
