Dear Supporter In addition to being the National Chair of BARAC UK, I am the National Vice President of the Public & Commercial Services (PCS) Union & this week I moved an emergency motion on behalf of our National Executive calling for a Public Inquiry into the Windrush scandal & full justice plus support for our petition. The motion was passed overwhelmingly by hundreds of delegates from across the UK. You can read a report here & watch the speech using the attached link. The full wording is at the bottom of this motion. https://www.pcs.org.uk/news/government-condemned-over-windrush-scandal I have received reports of planned charter flights to Nigeria & Pakistan which is of great concern given the Home Office press office told me there would be no deportations by air to Commonwealth countries in May. Please keep sharing the petitition. Thank you. Zita ; emergency motion wording below; EMERGENCY MOTION – WINDRUSH SCANDAL Conference notes the revelations made during April 2018 in the Guardian newspaper, and elsewhere in the media, concerning the treatment of British citizens from the Windrush generation. Conference condemns the government for detaining, deporting and denying access to services such as the NHS to people who came to the UK from Commonwealth countries and who have lived, worked and paid taxes in the UK for decades. Conference condemns the ‘hostile environment’ policy launched by Theresa May as Home Secretary in 2013 as inhumane and racist. We condemn Theresa May’s order to destroy landing cards which would have provided proof of residence. We condemn the failure to grant citizenship to people of the Windrush generation and the impact on their families including children and grandchildren. We note that, while the language has changed, the ‘hostile environment’ measures initiated by Theresa May when she was home secretary remain in place. Conference further notes that the government voted against a Labour motion in the Commons seeking access to documents laying out the policies behind the Windrush crisis. We note that ministers repeatedly sought to shift blame on to Home Office staff. Conference congratulates the black and race equality organisations, such as BARAC UK and the BME Lawyers 4 Justice, and politicians including shadow cabinet members, who have been campaigning on these issues; raising public awareness, and supporting families, including providing free legal advice surgeries and pro bono representation. Conference instructs the NEC to write to the Prime Minister calling for an independent public enquiry into the Windrush scandal, and to urge the Labour party and the TUC to support the call. Conference further instructs the NEC to: campaign for an end to all ‘hostile environment’ policy measures, fully support any PCS members and their families who have fallen foul of the Government’s disgraceful treatment of the Windrush generation, seek a written assurance from the government that there will be no mass deportations by charter flight or individual deportations on commercial flights to Commonwealth countries until such time that there is a clear policy in place, and circulate and encourage PCS members to sign the ‘change.org’ petition, “Stop all charter flight deportations to Jamaica and other Commonwealth countries”, support the call for justice for all those of the Windrush generation, including those already deported, to include return to the UK where wanted and compensation for all losses, injury and damages to date, support the call for fees for naturalisation to be waived for all impacted, oppose the criminalisation of Windrush families including electronic tagging and signing in with the Home Office, support the campaign for a National Windrush Day on 22nd June each year.
