Stop Alberta's Grizzly Bear and Elk Trophy Hunting Program

Stop Alberta's Grizzly Bear and Elk Trophy Hunting Program
The Issue
https://www.animalalliance.ca/the-killing-machine-is-us-why-we-say-no-to-grizzly-bear-trophies/
The Province of Alberta has a cruel way for “dealing with” “problem” grizzly bears and elk. Their “solution” is to have a registry of trophy hunters to act as exterminators to shoot any grizzly bear or elk herd who has had a negative encounter with humans or farm animals. The bear or elk could then be turned into a decoration. Killing animals never solves the problem of negative encounters with humans. Negative encounters are always due to attractants left out, like improperly stored food waste. Removing attractants is the only effective and humane way to deal with “problem” animals. We would like the province of Alberta to abandon their policy to allow trophy hunting and instead fully protect bears and elk, and add a province wide feeding and attractant ban.
TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ALBERTA AND MINISTER LOEWEN:
Whereas:
1. As umbrella species, where elk and grizzly bears are located, a relatively healthy ecosystem exists, this is required to keep healthy and natural interrelationships within ecosystems.
2. Grizzly bears and elk reproduce slowly and such animals have long been proved to be especially vulnerable to various outside stressors and mortality sources, including hunting.
3. Science does not support the public killing of grizzly bears or elk to manage conflict.
4. The majority of Albertans are opposed to a grizzly bear hunt and elk culls.
5. Grizzly bears are listed as a Threatened Species under the Alberta Wildlife Act and
all threats to the grizzly bear population recovery are human-caused. The government needs to work towards managing human-activity and human-use patterns to ensure people and grizzly bears can coexist.
6. The motivation of these new regulations is unclear given that they will not reduce conflict risk; there is no data or science to support it.
We therefore urge the Legislative Assembly of Alberta and Minister Loewen as follows:
1. To urge Minister Loewen to immediately rescind Ministerial Order 43/2024 and remove section 53.1 (Wildlife (Grizzly Bear – Ministerial) Amendment Regulation) from the Wildlife Act.
2. To permanently implement a ban on hunting grizzly bears in Alberta.
3. To implement all aspects of the Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan
