The Issue

This year, on May 28th, Lincoln High School has decided that Lincoln High School staff will not be reading names aloud, instead AI will be.

The main problem with involving AI usage or more specifically with the program “tassel.com” is that it doesn’t provide room for real human connection. The substitution of AI for a human voice is seen as disrespectful and doesn’t correctly shine the light on class of 2026’s  accomplishments over the past four years of our high school career. I know as someone who has worked very hard these past years I would appreciate the ability to be acknowledged and recognized through the traditional way of reading names aloud. If pronunciation is the main factor going into this as to why our school is implementing this process then some time should be taken out to reflect upon the names that are more ‘difficult’ to read.

We understand the challenges that come with pronouncing names but it’s necessary and essential to prioritize students experience and when a student’s name is read aloud by a facility member that has helped foster that student, it provides a personal connection and experience that cannot be replicated with AI. We know that wanting to find the most efficient way to accomplish things is the purpose of AI but in this specific situation it is not right.
