Stop AI music generators (Suno, Udio & Co.)

Stop AI music generators (Suno, Udio & Co.)

German version

To the music streaming services, AI development companies, music industry organizations and policy makers:

PART 1: STOP UNFAIR AI MUSIC GENERATORS

Today's large AI music generators use songs from artists worldwide without their consent to train their AI models. This raises considerable ethical and legal problems, as it massively harms the creativity and rights of artists and rights holders.

That is why we, as musicians and music lovers, demand:

1. A ban on unfair AI music generators that massively harm the rights of artists and rights holders. The use of AI music generators that use music without the consent of the artists must be stopped immediately. This is necessary to protect the rights and creativity of the artists.

2. Interim solution: AI fee for NGOs

As long as such a ban is not enforced, AI music producers should be obliged to pay 70% of their turnover to NGOs that support social music projects. This fee serves as compensation for copyright infringements and at the same time supports social music projects worldwide.

We also demand that those who make money from unfair AI-generated music through streams and downloads pay this fee of 70% of the revenue generated to these NGOs.

Maximum AI fee demanded:

This AI fee must be increased as much as possible based on the actual revenues of AI music generators..

3. Pragmatic AI fee: Given the difficulties in attributing unfairly AI-generated music to the original creators, a flat AI fee of 70% for social music projects worldwide is pragmatic and fair.

4. Fair distribution of the AI fee: An independent institution should monitor the collection and distribution of the fee and publish transparent reports, supported by tamper-proof blockchain technology. For this purpose, a worldwide legal requirement for labeling unfairly AI-generated songs must be implemented.

PART 2: FAIR AI IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

In the long term, it must be taken into account that AI contributes to the democratization of music production by enabling everyone, regardless of their musical and financial background, to create high-quality music. This promotes creative diversity worldwide, but only if AI technologies are used ethically and legally.

That is why we, as musicians and music lovers, demand:

1. Generative models and research on fair use: development and deployment of fair AI models that generate new content without copying existing copyrighted works, and investment in research on fair use and the protection of original data.

2. Use of public domain works and open source: AI developers should use public domain works and open source or Creative Commons licenses to train AI models fairly.

3. Generate own data and licensed data: Companies and researchers should generate their own data or enter into legal license agreements to train AI models fairly and respect artists' rights.

4. Transparency and mandatory labeling: Fairly generated AI music should also be subject to a worldwide legal labeling obligation and transparent reporting of revenues.

5. Promotion of social music projects: A fee of 20% of the sales of fair AI music generators is to be paid to non-profit NGOs that support social music promotion projects.

I also generated the video for the song with AI (Kaiber.ai), but I can't save the whole world and am therefore focusing on the topic of (un)fair AI-generated music.
