The Issue

School is meant to learn; in more ways than one. School is also an outlet for creativity in learning, and AI is taking that away. More than ever, AI has been in the process of integrating into our school life. If we want to preserve our creativity, (and our environment!) we must stop AI from being used in schools. Some of the students in the district have some things they would like to say on the matter.

Sophia Steel: “AI is destroying creativity and innovation in today’s world. Creating something that is originally man made by taking a short cut through ai is giving power to the man. There is nothing wrong with the machine but the people who run it. Take your AI and get out of my schools and my life. ( shameless self plug @masspropagandayay insta)

Tessa Robbins: “I have seen that giving kids, especially in their early youth open access to generative ai leads to them becoming dependent on it for simple assignments and we should be teaching our generation how to think and create work ourselves.”

Anonymous: “there is no more creativity outside of school, and now it’s inside of our schools. I see teachers using it to make assignments, I see kids use it to do the assignment. Work has started to feel like one big lie that everyone just feeds into.”

Noah Taylor: “As an undergrad at the University of Tulsa, and former student of Broken Arrow Highschool, some of the most important moments in my development as a person and a scholar at school have been learning to research and interpret texts myself. There is a notable difference in my peers between those who use and reject AI in their literacy, research skills, and critical thinking. Even the seemingly most banal uses of AI–like using Chat-GPT as a search engine/research starter, or using LLMs generally to provide constructive criticisms on essays–robs students of the agency and basic human input needed to learn real-world critical thinking skills that help them succeed both as a scholar and as a member of society broadly. "Artificial intelligence" is absolutely a misnomer. An LLM or generative image tool has no thoughts, and absolutely have no grasp of semantic meaning. By exporting our thinking to tools which cannot think, we are destroying any hope of having meaningful thoughts ourselves. In the words of Immanuel Kant, "Dare to think!" We have seemingly rejected this fundamental notion of enlightenment thought, and as such, we may lose one of the greatest achievements of the enlightenment: our individual freedom of thought on which our American republican democracy is founded. I make this same dare to our students now: dare to think!”

We hope you support our cause in stopping this. Thank you!
