Stop AI from Replacing Creators
The Issue
On the drive up to Big Bear, you notice the litter right away. A coffee cup tossed out someone’s window, a plastic bag caught on a fence, cigarette butts among the wildflowers. It’s like people forgot about “leave no trace.”
The internet is starting to feel the same way. Scroll Instagram or YouTube and it's getting harder to tell what's real. Too-perfect photos of places no one has been. Apps, websites and even flyers that all look eerily the same. Digital clones of your favorite creators. One piece on its own is not the end of the world. The issue is how much of it there is and that it's piling up everywhere.
Call it what you want: digital litter, synthetic garbage, AI slop.
People follow creators on social media for real advice from real people. When a photographer shares a shot that took four sunrises to get, a guide tests the boots through a river crossing or someone points you to a hidden beach off the beaten path, you trust them because they were actually there. AI can't go into the backcountry, test gear in the elements or feel sand under its feet.
Behind that work are photographers, filmmakers, writers, editors and creators who have spent years learning their craft. Now their work is being cloned without credit, or they're straight up being replaced by fictional personas that have never set foot outside.
Audiences can tell and that wears trust away fast. One survey found that 73% of people are less likely to trust content they suspect was made using AI [The Harris Poll].
Brands have heavily relied on creators to help them tell their story, sell more products, and find new customers. So today we’re asking them to show up and support the people behind their success.
If you’re a brand, creator or industry leader, help us stop AI from replacing human creatives.
- Keep real people behind creative work
- Invest in tools that support and enhance human creatives instead of replacing them
- Always be upfront when something is AI-generated
People who spend time outdoors live by a simple rule: leave it better than you found it. With the amount of time we all spend in our digital worlds, we deserve the same for social media.
We’ll start by honoring these commitments and adopting multiple highways across the country, with our first on the road to Big Bear.
