The Issue

As families search for their missing children in the wake of the catastrophic Texas floods, they're being hit with something almost as cruel as the disaster itself: lies.

AI-generated images of celebrities “wading through floodwaters.” Fake rescue stories that never happened. False claims about who’s been found—shared thousands of times. For parents holding out hope, these viral hoaxes are devastating. They’re not just wrong—they’re dangerous.

While real families are grieving and waiting for updates, they’re being exposed to clickbait lies, scam fundraisers, and AI-generated fiction designed to manipulate their pain for profit. One fake rescue report was shared so widely that local news had to retract it. Some families have even been contacted by scammers claiming they’ve found their child—for a price.

We are calling on Meta, X, TikTok, and all major platforms to immediately:
Label or remove AI-generated flood content, shut down viral hoaxes about victims, and enforce real protections for grieving families.

This is not a free speech issue. It’s a matter of dignity and safety during the most traumatic moment of someone’s life. No parent searching for their child should be exposed to a lie designed to go viral.

If platforms won’t act, then lawmakers must. Families in Texas—and everywhere—deserve the truth, not synthetic hope.
