The Issue

On a tragic day in August in North Dakota, a heinous crime claimed the life of my beloved cousin, Alexia, while her two innocent young children narrowly escaped with theirs. Her attacker was her significant other. He brutally assaulted her in front of her children over multiple days. Afterwards, in an effort to cover these attacks, he allegedly set her home on fire with her and her children barricaded inside. The shadow of this traumatic event still looms heavily over our family, made worse by the possibility of a profound miscarriage of justice. Clear home surveillance captured the harrowing incident, and the evidence unequivocally establishes the guilt of the accused. Yet, in a stunning turn, it seems justice may not be served due to a proposed plea deal.

Assault with intent to murder and tampering with evidence charges are being considered over a murder and arson trial, a scenario that disregards the gravity of the crime and the immense loss suffered by our family. While plea deals are common in the judicial system to avoid lengthy trials, each case should be evaluated on its unique merits, especially when human lives are desecrated in such a brutal manner.

This plea deal not only undermines the severity of the crime, but it also sends a dangerous message to society—that the court may tolerate leniency in the face of undisputed violence and loss of life. Our justice system's very integrity hangs in the balance; it must reflect our collective commitment to upholding the value of human life and ensure that those who commit such grave transgressions face the full consequences of their actions.

The confidence the public holds in the justice system depends on its ability to deliver fair and proportionate sentences. If accepted, this plea deal will not provide closure or peace, but rather reopen the wounds of loss with the knowledge that justice was not fully served.

We urge every compassionate individual, every believer in justice, and any concerned citizen to join our plea. Demand that the federal judge assigned to this case reconsider accepting this plea deal and instead, proceed with a full murder trial. It is crucial for the integrity of our judicial process and for the memory of those who have fallen victim to violence.

Please stand with us and endorse this petition. Your signature signifies a vote for justice and a commitment to ensuring that those guilty of heinous crimes are held fully accountable. Help us honor the truth, pursue justice, and bring peace to the hearts affected by this crime.
